Capsaicin Review

Capsaicin is an alkylamide found in Capsicum that acts at the TRPV Cation Channels. It is basically a chili pepper extract with analgesic properties. It is a neuropeptide releasing agent that is selective for primary sensory peripheral neurons. It is presnt in large quantities in the placental tissue (which holds the seeds), the internal membraned, and in other fleshy part of fruits and vegetables of the genus Capsicum. When used topically, capsaicin aids in controlling peripheral nerve pain. It has also been used as a medication to treat minor aches and pains of the muscles and joints and works by decreasing sunstance P, a natural substance found in our body, that helps pass pain signals to the brain. In addition to that, capsaicin has been used experimentally to manipulate other tachykinins as well as in controlling chemotherapy- and radiotherapy- induced mucositis. Some studies have shown results that capsaicin act as inhibitor of proteasomal activity in order to stimulate bone growth as well as hair gwoth, as a transdermal delivery of an anti-inflammatory composition and as a ligand binding assay for vanilloid receptors.
It is also known as Chili extract, Hot pepper extract, trans-8-methyl-N-Vanilyl-6-nonenamide, Capsaicinoids.
